To-ji
東寺
Founded at the start of the Heian period as one of two guardian temples at the capital's south entrance, To-ji is part of the UNESCO Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto. Its five-storied pagoda, first built in 826, is 57 m tall.

Tip
The outer grounds and Miedo hall are outside the paid area; the fee covers the Kondo and Kodo halls and the pagoda precinct. On the 21st of each month the grounds fill with the Kobo-ichi flea market.
